By 1920 Chicago had increased by more than one million residents. In the South, the departure of hundreds of thousands of African Americans caused the black percentage of the population in most southern states decrease. The Great Migration enabled educated blacks to obtain jobs.
During World War 1 factories in northern and Midwestern cities faced extreme labor shortages. Mostly because more than 5 million men enlisted in the army. Also because the United States government halted immigration from European countries. They offered higher pay, such as $2.50 per day in a meat packing house or $5.00 per day on an assembly line in Detroit.
Frederick Douglas, Booker T. Washington and the Catholic Priest Father James Groppi all played an important part during the time of The Great Migration. There was also an important but early Mexican American person by the name of Estevanico. Estevanico was sent by a mission by Antonio De Mendoza ruler of Spain's colony in America. One important person was Jim Crow. Jim Crow found jobs for the African Americans in the North. Although the deal was made when the African Americans moved to the North they were beat and 37 African Americans died.
